A .kcpps file stores all launcher settings: model, backend, context size, network and everything else. Save one to reuse your setup, move it to a new KoboldCpp version, or start KoboldCpp without the launcher.
Save and load in the launcher
Section titled “Save and load in the launcher”- Save Config writes all current settings to a
.kcppsfile. - Load Config fills the launcher with the settings from a
.kcppsfile (or a.kcppttemplate). It does not launch; check the settings, then click Launch.
Selecting a .kcpps file in a model field (for example with Browse next to GGUF Text Model:) loads it as a config too.
The launcher does not remember settings between runs. To keep them, use Save Config.
Old config files
Section titled “Old config files”An old config with "flashattention": false or "useswa": false turns flash attention or SWA off, although both are on by default now. After updating, load the config, tick Use FlashAttention and Allow SWA, and save it again.
Start with a config
Section titled “Start with a config”These start KoboldCpp with the saved settings, without the launcher:
- Drag the file onto the KoboldCpp exe.
- Command line:
--config.
C:\mystuff\koboldcpp.exe --config mysettings.kcpps./koboldcpp-linux-x64 --config mysettings.kcpps./koboldcpp-mac-arm64 --config mysettings.kcppsThe file name also works without --config: koboldcpp.exe mysettings.kcpps. --config also accepts an http:// or https:// URL that ends in .kcpps or .kcppt; KoboldCpp downloads the file first.
The examples below write koboldcpp for your KoboldCpp file.
To open a config in the launcher and change it before launching, add --showgui:
koboldcpp --config mysettings.kcpps --showguiOn Windows, Register on the Extra tab makes .kcpps files open with KoboldCpp. Opening a file starts KoboldCpp with it right away; the file's Edit action opens it in the launcher instead.
Change one setting from the command line
Section titled “Change one setting from the command line”Flags after --config override the value in the file. The terminal confirms each one with Overriding Config Value: <name>.
koboldcpp --config mysettings.kcpps --contextsize 4096Tested with a config saved with context size 2048:
Added to --config | Context size used |
|---|---|
--contextsize 4096 | 4096 |
--ctx-size 4096 | 2048 |
-c 4096 | 2048 |
--contextsize=4096 | 2048 |
Other rules:
--modeloverrides the model in the file.--port 5001does not override a different port saved in the file, because 5001 is the default. Change the port in the file, or in the launcher with--showgui.--helpsays other arguments are ignored when you use--config. The rule above is what actually happens.
Create a config from the command line
Section titled “Create a config from the command line”--exportconfig writes the given flags to a .kcpps file and exits without loading anything. .kcpps is added to the name if missing.
koboldcpp --model mymodel.gguf --contextsize 8192 --exportconfig mysettingsThe file stores the flags as given. Values KoboldCpp works out at launch, such as automatic GPU layers or the automatically chosen backend, are not in it.
What is stored
Section titled “What is stored”A .kcpps file is plain JSON. It has one entry per command-line setting, named like the flag without dashes, for example contextsize, gpulayers or model_param (the model).
- Passwords are stored as plain text. This includes Password: and Admin Password:. Don't share
.kcppsfiles that contain them. To share a setup, export a template instead. It removes the passwords and resets most PC-specific settings, but local file paths stay in it, so check the file before you share it. - These are never stored:
--config,--exportconfig,--exporttemplate,--analyze,--unpack,--versionand--allow-config-onready.
Advanced
Section titled “Advanced”Shell commands in configs
Section titled “Shell commands in configs”--onready runs a shell command after the model has loaded. A config file can contain one, so KoboldCpp ignores onready from a config unless you also pass --allow-config-onready on the command line. Only use that flag with configs you trust. A config cannot turn it on by itself.
Errors
Section titled “Errors”| Message | Cause |
|---|---|
Specified kcpp config file invalid or not found. | The file does not exist, or the URL could not be downloaded. |
A long Python error mentioning json | The file exists but is not valid JSON, usually after a hand edit. |
The selected config file seems to be invalid. (Load Config) | The file is missing, nearly empty, or larger than 50 MB. |
